There is no summer without alpargatas (just as there is no summer without our design skills). The word "alpargata" comes from the Catalan term "espardenya". The latter referred-from its origins-to the tarp shoes with soles of coiled rope and vertical seams that were used by the peasants of the 14th century in the Spanish Pyrenees. The footwear firm Castañer, a family factory launched in 1927, was in charge of making shoes for Republican soldiers during the Spanish Civil War. And the rest is history.
In the 1940s, the same design had succeeded in appearing in the most renowned fashion magazines and Hollywood began to be marked by its use. Firms like Lanvin, Hermès and Christian Louboutin sued Castañer for his luxury spadrills. In addition, the firm made the iconic wedges of Yves Saint Laurent in the early 1970s.
With the passage of time, without looking for it, the alpargates had become a basic accessory for the spring and summer season. We can't imagine Coco Chanel wearing other shoes on his Navy getaway to the French Riviera, nor do we understand our current summers without timeless and classic designs such as alpargatas.
