Andy Spade also recounted that he spoke to his wife the night before she was found dead in her Manhattan apartment and that she "sounded happy."

The New York Medical Examiner's Office officially determined that Spade's cause of death was hanging and that the manner of death was suicide, the entity reported Thursday morning.

Kate Spade suffered from anxiety and depression for years, her husband said. He also explained that for five years she was treated by doctors and took medication for illnesses.

Andy Spade indicated that they were living in different places, but that he was in daily contact, either visiting her or talking to her.

"There were no signs or warnings that she was going to do this," he said. “It was a complete shock. And it obviously wasn't her. There were personal demons that she was struggling with,” he insisted.

Andy Spade maintained that he and his wife decided to take time out and live in separate places for 10 months. But the two vowed to continue raising their daughter together, so they often ate dinner together and took vacations as a family, Andy Spade added.

“We were best friends trying to solve our problems the best way we knew how,” he recounted. “We were together for 35 years. We loved each other so much and we just needed some time.”

Kate Spade had no alcohol or substance abuse problems, he added.

Andy Space referred to her wife as the kindest person he had ever met and explained that he could not understand her life without her.

Kate Spade, who created an iconic and accessible line of bags, ended her own life according to sources from the New York Police Department. The entity arrived at her apartment at 10:10 a.m. local time Thursday after Spade was found by her housekeeper, according to Detective Chief Dermot Shea. .

A suicide note was found at the scene, the official added. Spade, 55, was addressing her daughter in the message she left, according to two NYPD sources. Spade's husband is also mentioned in the note, one of the sources said.

Andy Spade emphasized that he was "appalled" that "a private message to my daughter" had been shared with the media.
