Why a Tiffany & Co. engagement ring can cost more than a million pesos

There is no more iconic brand when it comes to engagement rings than Tiffany & Co. and the little blue boxes of hers that every bride dreams of receiving one day. But their diamond rings are not the most accessible on the market.

On average, the cheapest ring in its catalog can cost no less than 80 thousand Mexican pesos and from there, it can exceed one million pesos depending on the material of the band, the cut of the diamond and how many stones and carats it has.

But why are they so expensive? There are several reasons why Tiffany & Co. reach such exorbitant prices that very few can afford and it has to do with the history of the brand and the quality they seek in each of the diamonds that adorn their rings.

These are the main reasons why an engagement ring from Tiffany & Co. that comes wrapped in one of those little blue boxes with white ribbon is so coveted and expensive.

1) The history of the brand

Tiffany was founded in 1837 by Charles Lewis Tiffany and John B. Young and from the beginning they specialized in the creation of silver pieces. So much so that in 1867 it became the first company to have the Grand Prize in silver crafts at the World's Fair in Paris.

In 1878 the brand bought the world's largest yellow diamond -- the one worn by Lady Gaga at the 2019 Oscars and in 1886 it was Tiffany who introduced the concept of the modern engagement ring. The one who should wear a solitaire diamond on a gold setting.

2) Use a fifth element to choose diamonds

Traditionally four characteristics are used to determine if a diamond is of good quality: cut, clarity, carat and color, but Tifanny also takes into account “the presence” of the diamond. This is that to be a stone endorsed by the jewelry brand it must have superior brilliance, scintillation and light scattering that makes people stop to look at it.

3) They take their time to make a ring

From the moment the diamond is discovered until it is mounted on a ring ready to surprise someone it can take up to a year.

And it is that the classic jewelry ring, called The Tiffany Setting is carefully made so that the stone stands out. This model was the one that the brand introduced at the end of the 19th century and it is designed to give the illusion that the diamond is floating on the band of the ring. In addition, thanks to the "presence" of the stone, its brightness will attract the attention of anyone and will bring a tear of happiness to whoever receives it.

4) The Tiffany standard

Being very specific with the characteristics that Tiffany diamonds must meet, finding the right stones is a difficult task, which is why of the total diamonds sold each year, the brand buys only 0.4%. That is, it rejects 99.96% of diamonds that can be used in rings.

5) It's quite an experience to enter Tiffany's

It's not for nothing that one of Audrey Hepburn's most iconic movies is Breakfast at Tiffany's. Although the brand's most important store is the one on Fifth Avenue in New York, entering any of its boutiques is quite an experience in which you will feel guided at every moment of your purchase. Even on their website they have a guide to choose the right diamond, decide what cut or what material is best, because in the end if you are going to spend so much money, it must be a wise investment.
